Today we got underway and did our first passage in our new boat. We went from Naples to Key West, a run of about 95 nautical miles across the Gulf of Mexico. The conditions started out choppy in Naples. Choppy enough that we were finding the normal cruising speed of 25 knots was resulting in a lot of pounding. I slowed down to 22 knots which dramatically decreased the pounding.
When we entered the Northwest Channel, which goes through the coral reef into Key West the water was smooth as glass and very turquoise in color. Unfortunately Brooke and I didn't take any photos of this beautiful stretch of water. Since the depth of the water outside of the channel is only a foot or two, we were intently watching for buoys and daymarks and not shooting photos.
Heading over to the fuel dock and our first fill up.
Jackie chose to relax on the foredeck as we left the fuel dock and headed out of Naples Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
A short little video as we were cruising along when we were approximately half way between Naples and Key West.
Upon arrival in Key West, we immediately headed to what is one of favorite things there, The Cuban Coffee Queen. Besides there amazingly good coffee, you just have to love their motto, "Drink more Cuban coffee and do stupid things faster".
Enjoying cocktails and a snack before dinner at Galleon Marina, our location for the next three nights, in the Key West Bight.
Our first Key West sunset of the trip.
